As we get closer to the implementation of the intelligent mail barcode (more information to come), it is important to think about how this is going to change the way we mail. Due to the fact that this new barcode is 1/25" inch higher than the current barcode, window envelopes will need to be larger. On a #10 standard business envelope, a sensible dimension of the new window could be 1-3/8" by 4-1/2". The current window size on most standard manufactured #10 envelopes (1-1/8" by 4-1/2") that is now being used is the same it has been for 20 years. Many did not change the window size after the current barcode was instituted, and therefore the standard window does not allow adequate space. This window does not provide space for anything much beyond a three-line address and the barcode to show through the window. This new window envelope will not only allow room for the new, larger intelligent mail barcode, but it will also allow more addressing space when using the current barcode.
In order to prepare for this change and to make processing easier now, it will be important to make sure that you are using the correct window envelopes for your mailings. We suggest that you begin this transition to the "larger window" envelope now, so that by the time the intelligent mail barcode is required, your stock will be updated and ready to use.
Several envelope manufacturers have already started offering these new larger window envelopes as a stock item. Contact us in order to get more information about where to get these new envelopes, as well as the prices. We would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
Even with this new change happening a bit down the road, we would be happy to help you prepare.
